Nicolas Christou MD, PhD, FRCSC
Our past president and founding father of CABPS obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from McGill University in 1971 and his Doctor of Medicine in 1975. He completed his surgical training at McGill in 1980 and was appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery, McGill University and Attending Staff Surgeon, Royal Victoria Hospital in 1981. He rose through the academic ranks at McGill and became a Professor of Surgery in 1991. He was head of the Division of General Surgery at the RVH and the MUHC from 1991 to 2005. Dr. Christou was the Director of Bariatric Surgery, McGill University Health Center up to his retirement in 2013, so his PREM can be given to a younger bariatric surgeon (Dr. R. Agarwal).
Dr. Christou contineous to practice part time in the private sector. He has limited his practice exclusively to bariatric surgery. He started the first laparoscopic weight loss surgery program in Canada on February 8, 2002.
Dr. Christou holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from McGill in Surgical Immunology. His research efforts over the last 20 years focused on surgical infections and the host response to infections. His current research interests are: Outcomes Research -Impact of Bariatric Surgery on Mortality, Morbidity and Health Care Costs. He has published over 250 peer reviewed publications, more than 40 book chapters and over 350 abstracts.
Dr. Christou is the past Chair of the Program Committee of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
He is a member of the American Surgical Association, The Canadian Association of General Surgeons, The American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and CABPS.
