Allan Okrainec MD, FRCSC

Dr. Okrainec is Program Director of the Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at the University of Toronto, and the Surgical Director of the Temerty Advanced Surgical Education and Simulation Centre in the Michener Institute of Education at University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto. He is the Medtronic Chair in Minimally Invasive Surgery at UHN, University of Toronto. He also serves as the Surgical Lead for Planning and Infrastructure at UHN. His clinical practice specializes in minimally invasive upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Okrainec is widely recognized for his work in telesimulation for the remote training and assessment of laparoscopic surgical skills around the world. His academic interests include studying advances in minimally invasive surgical techniques and technologies, including clinical outcomes and novel educational approaches for training new surgical skills.
Dr. Okrainec completed medical school at McGill University and residency in General Surgery at McMaster University. He went on to complete a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at McGill University. Dr. Okrainec also completed a Master’s Degree in Health Professions Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Okrainec has held leadership roles in several national and international surgical societies. He is on the Executive Board of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO), and currently serves as the Vice President of CABPS.
