Objectives:

This discussion will provide clinical insight to equip clinicians with practical strategies to identify obesity phenotypes and apply phenotype-guided therapies to deliver more personalized and effective obesity care. 

  1. Differentiate homeostatic eating from hedonic/emotional eating and explain the neurobiological drivers of appetite regulation and reward pathways. 
  2. Explain practical approaches to differentiating eating behaviors/hunger in clinical practice. 
  3. Apply evidence-based, integrated management strategies that address different eating behaviors, including pharmacologic and behavioral approaches for personalized obesity treatment.

bio picDr. Radu Pescarus, MD, FRCSC

After completing a Bachelor of Science in Biology at McGill University, Dr. Radu Pescarus continued his medical studies at the University of Montreal. He pursued his general surgery training in the hospitals of the University of Montreal, followed by a one-year fellowship in Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery at McMaster University. Subsequently, he underwent a second clinical fellowship in Portland, USA to further his knowledge of esophago-gastric surgery as well as advanced gastrointestinal therapeutic endoscopy. Upon his return to Quebec, he joined the surgery department of the Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal and is currently an Associate Professor at Université de Montréal. His clinical practice specializes in minimally invasive bariatric surgery, foregut surgery, as well as gastrointestinal therapeutic endoscopy, including third space endoscopic procedures. 

Dr. Pescarus is currently the President of CABPS and is equally involved with the clinical and research training of international bariatric surgery fellows, as well as senior residents during their minimally-invasive surgery rotation every year. His academic interests include clinical outcomes research in revisional bariatric surgery and the endoscopic treatment of upper gastrointestinal surgical complications.

bio picDr. Sara Ahmed, MD, ABIM, ABOM

Dr. Sara Ahmed is an internal medicine and obesity physician and the Founder of Metamed Weight Management Center in Burlington, Ontario. Board certified in both internal medicine and obesity medicine, she has spent the past five years at the forefront of multidisciplinary obesity care, leading a team of dietitians, psychologists, and exercise specialists in delivering comprehensive, evidence-based treatment. She holds an academic appointment as Assistant Clinical Professor (Adjunct) in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University, where she supervises and teaches medical students and residents. 

She has delivered dozens of invited and accredited presentations on obesity management, weight bias, and cardiometabolic health across Canada and internationally. Dr. Ahmed also served as faculty and contributing author for Obesity Canada's Fundamentals of Obesity course and is passionate about advocating for advancing Women’s and South Asians health.

Dr. Bittman is a General Internist at The University of British Columbia, where he also completed his medical school and internal medicine residency. 

He currently works at Revolution Medical Clinic, a multidiscipiliary obesity and hypertension clinic in Vancouver.  His clinical focus is on medical and surgical management of obesity and management of resistant hypertension.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Bittman sits on national clinical guidelines committees for hypertension and is involved in research aiming to improve care of patient living with obesity and hypertension.
