Objectives
- Learn to accurately identify hypoglycemia in the post roux-en-y gastric bypass patient
- Review an approach to assess hypoglycemia in a post RYGB patient and differentiate between hypoglycemia caused by nesidioblastosis (reactive hypoglycemia), inadequate nutrition, and rare causes such as insulinoma.
- To apply evidence-based practices in the management of post RYGB hypoglycemia including dietary, pharmacologic, and surgical approaches

Dr. Stephen Glazer is a board-certified specialist from the University of Toronto in Internal Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. In April 2010 he was appointed as the Medical Director for the Bariatric Surgical Program at Humber River Regional Hospital. He was instrumental in redeveloping their comprehensive bariatric surgical program. In that year, the bariatric surgical program was nominated as a Leading Practice by Accreditation Canada. In 2012 Dr. Glazer was appointed as the Director of the only hospital-based Medical Bariatric Program for the Greater Toronto Area, which has enjoyed great growth and development due to the significant contributions of its multidiscipline team members. Dr. Glazer's commitment to the Obesity Epidemic is further displayed by his participation in many committees through the Ontario Bariatric Network and the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons. He has a strong interest in program development, quality care initiatives, and physician education. He has personally been involved in direct patient care of over thousands of bariatric patients in the attempt to facilitate weight loss for improved overall health. His research interests include perioperative risk assessment and management as well as sleep apnea in the morbidly obese. He is also the president of the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Heidi Dutton is an adult endocrinologist at The Ottawa Hospital in the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism and is an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa. She completed her medical degree at Queen’s University and her residencies in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology & Metabolism at the University of Ottawa. She then went on to complete a clinical and research fellowship in Bariatric Medicine, as well as a Master of Science degree in Clinical Epidemiology, both at the University of Ottawa. She now practices in the areas of diabetes, general endocrinology, and weight management. She works part time at The Ottawa Hospital and part time in her community weight management clinic, Aroga Lifestyle Medicine (Ottawa). In her weight management practice, she has a special interest in endocrine complications following bariatric surgery, as well as treating weight regain in patients who have undergone bariatric surgery.

Amy MacDonald is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator. She graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Bachelors in Kinesiology and went on to obtain a Masters of Applied Human Nutrition from McGill University. She has been working at the Ottawa Hospital since 2011, dividing her time between Endocrinology and Diabetes and the Bariatric Centre of Excellence. She supports patients living with Diabetes by providing Medical Nutrition Therapy to a number of specialized Endocrinology clinics including Bariatrics and High-Risk Obstetrics.

Jenna Crown is a registered Dietitian working with the Division of Endocrinology and Bariatric Surgery team at the QE2 Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Applied Human Nutrition with Integrated Internship Program from Mount Saint Vincent University. Since then, she has worked in a variety of different settings including Public Health, Primary Health Care and Ambulatory Care where she helps support patients work towards their personal health and nutrition goals through individualized nutrition counseling.
