Nutrition Algorithm for Bariatric Surgical Patients

The management of post-operative nutrition begins pre-operatively. This session will focus on conducting a comprehensive nutritional assessment pre-operatively and look at the development of a nutrition algorithm and bariatric nutrition risk screening tool. Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the key components of a bariatric nutrition assessment using the International Dietetics and Nutrition Terminology (IDNT).
  2. Distinguish nutrition-related risks commonly found in bariatric patients.
  3. Gain insight into the preliminary development of a nutrition algorithm and bariatric nutrition risk screening tool.

Jennifer Brown, BSc., RD

Registered Dietitian, The Ottawa Hospital Weight Management Clinic and Bariatric Surgery Program

Jennifer Brown graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 2005 and started specializing in bariatric nutrition after internship training with the Edmonton Weight Wise program, ASMBS, and the Canadian Obesity Network. She is presently a Registered Dietitian with The Ottawa Hospital Weight Management Clinic and Bariatric Centre of Excellence and is chair of the Bariatric Dietitian Task Force; a specialty subgroup of the Ontario Bariatric Network. Jennifer is currently pursuing her Master’s at the University of Ottawa under Dr. Eric Doucet; exploring the relationship between hedonic hunger and gastrointestinal hormone changes after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. She hopes to collaborate nutrition-related research across the bariatric centers in Ontario and internationally.
