Gut hormones: the future of obesity treatment?

In this short presentation, I will critically review the evidence for anti-obesity effects of gut hormones in humans, focussing on GLP-1 and GIP.

Dr. Carpentier is the recipient of the CIHR-GSK Chair in Diabetes and professor and clinician-scientist in the Departments of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Sherbrooke and the Centre de recherche clinique Étienne-Le Bel. He is also the director of the university’s Diabetes, Obesity and Cardiovascular Complications Research Centre and the director of the new Cardiometabolic Health, Diabetes and Obesity Research Network of the province of Quebec.

Dr. Carpentier’s research interests include the investigation of postprandial fatty acid metabolism and brown fat metabolism in the development of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. He also investigates the anti-diabetic mechanisms of bariatric surgery. His research funding includes grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA), and the Fonds de recherche en santé du Québec (FRSQ).

Dr. Carpentier has been a member of numerous scientific panels for granting agencies including the CDA, CIHR, FRSQ and HSFC. He is also a member of the Advisory Editorial Board for Diabetes. Dr. Carpentier has published more than 200 peer-reviewed abstracts and communications and 85 peer-reviewed publications. He is the recipient for multiple awards, including the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Quebec’s Jonathan-Ballon Award (2004), the 2009 André-Dupont Young Scientist Award of the Club de recherche clinique du Québec, the 2011 Young Diabetes Investigator Award from the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism and the 2012 Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Diabetes Association.
