Co-Chairs

Dr. Kenneth Reed

Dr. J. Kenneth Reed, a native of Guelph, obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Toronto. After a straight surgical internship at the Toronto Western Hospital he completed general surgical training in Toronto University's Gallie Program. He obtained specialty certification in General Surgery in 1989. After fellowship training at the Toronto General Hospital, he moved to Guelph where he has practised General Surgery since 1990.

Dr. Reed has been involved with Weight Loss Surgery since 1994, when as Chief of Surgery he supported the transition of bariatric surgery at Guelph's St. Joseph's Hospital from a sporadic operation to a hospital program. Encouraged by patients' successful long term weight loss, he brought the program to the Guelph General Hospital when the city's surgical services consolidated in 2000. At that time he was one of only very few surgeons providing weight loss surgery in Ontario. In 2004, with the mentorship of Dr. Nicholas Christou of McGill University, Dr. Reed introduced laparoscopic gastric bypass to the Guelph program.

In 2009 Guelph General Hospital was designated as a bariatric surgery Center of Excellence by the Ontario Bariatric Network, and recently Dr. Reed was pleased to contribute to the network as chair of its Advisory Board's Surgical Task Force.

Dr. Reed has performed over 500 weight loss procedures, including open and laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, and sleeve gastrectomy. He fully supports the laparoscopic roux en y gastric bypass as the gold standard operation for the Ontario Bariatric Network.
