Plenary Session - CURRENT OUTCOMES AND MANAGEMENT
Choice of Surgical Approach

Co-Chairs: Drs. Kenneth Reed, Teodor Grantcharov

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Should Be The Standard of Care

Gastric bypass was first done by Dr. Mason in the 1960's. It has been proven to be a safe and reliable procedure for weight loss. There are no other bariatric procedures that have been performed for the length of time that have surpassed the safety and efficacy of this operation. Centers of Excellence are performing this procedure with mortality rates that approach laparoscopic cholecystectomy. There is long term data supporting the improved survival in patients that have had this operation when compared to other bariatric procedures.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to understand why gastric bypass for obesity is considered to be the "gold standard" when comparing bariatric procedures.
