Voices from the hinterland Part 2: Local challenges of bariatric surgery management
Presenter: Dr. Fergal O'Hagan, PhD

Learning Objectives
At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe challenges identified by local primary health teams in bariatric management.
  2. Discuss potential research on and improvements to local systems of care

In this qualitative study, we explored the challenges of bariatric care for health care providers remote from the Centres of Excellence. Participants (physicians, dieticians, mental health professionals) discussed the importance of integrated, local support for patients through the surgical process, postoperative period and longer term. Specific challenges were identified in referral processes, dealing with post-surgical complications and adherence to eating plans and shifting long-standing eating patterns in the patient's usual environment. Technical support from Centres of Excellence was valued; however, distributed expertise to support long-term weight loss would be useful in day-to-day care.
