Concurrent Session - Allied Health and Nutrition
Co-Chairs: Ms. Tammy Eborall, Ms. Sue Ekserci
Pre and Postoperative Diabetes Management
Studies show that bariatric surgery can lead to an improvement of type 2 diabetes in obese patients. These changes can be remarkable and are often demonstrated soon after surgery, and may continue to change for many months after surgery. There are also changes is blood sugar control in the 2-3 week time period prior to surgery. It is this varying amount of change that makes it essential for diabetes management, and education, in the pre-operative and on-going post-operative management of the patient having bariatric surgery.
Learning Objectives

- understand the management of diabetes in the bariatric patient in the 2-3 week period prior to surgery
- understand the management of diabetes in the bariatric patient in the immediate post-operative period in hospital
- understand the management of diabetes in the bariatric patient in the long-term post-operative period
