Co-Chairs: Ms. Tammy Eborall, Ms. Sue Ekserci

Vitamin and Mineral Supplementation After Bariatic Surgery

Each variation of bariatric surgery performed commonly in Ontario is associated with micronutrient deficiencies.  Deficiency can occur through a combination of reduced dietary intake, and reduced absorption within the gastrointestinal tract.  In order to prevent deficiencies, a long-term commitment to supplementation is required.  This presentation will review the current recommendations for vitamin and mineral supplementation after bariatric surgery, and will also highlight some gaps in the current literature.

Learning Objectives

  • At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to relay the micronutrient deficiencies most commonly seen with bariatric surgery.
  • At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to understand the current routine supplementation recommendations for all bariatric surgery patients in Ontario.
