Objective:
After this presentation, attendees will be able to:
- Identify the continuing challenge of post-operative iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in patients with metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS).
- Explain the pathophysiological mechanisms of IDA as they relate to MBS, including surgical type and changes in nutrient absorption.
- Interpret relevant assessment of and laboratory data related to IDA.
- Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of various forms of iron (chelated, encapsulated, infusion) for patients with MBS.
- Apply a patient centered approach and best practice of prevention and treatment of IDA post-MBS.
